Frequently Asked Questions

When did you start programming?

When I was ~10 years old I started programming on a Sinclair ZX80. It had 1K of RAM. The display required a connection to a television set (so I programmed on the living room floor). You could load and save programs by connecting the computer to a tape recorder via the aux plug.

What did you love about programming when you started?

Programming was my gateway to subjects beyond math, which was my favorite. You cannot build a great game for example, without learning about music, or art, or color theory. Programming made other disciplines relevant and interesting.

What do you love about programming today?

I am a creative person and enjoy making things and understanding how things work. Programming allows me to express myself, in much the same way an author would write, or a painter would paint.

What kind of name is Arakelian?

Arakelian is an Armenian name. Many Armenians have last names end with -ian or -yan.

Are you Armenian?

I'm half Armenian. My paternal grandparents were both born in Armenia. They survived the Armenian Genocide and fled to Egypt where my father and his siblings were born. My father eventually came to the United States on an academic scholarship where he met my mother at Brown University. My maternal grandmother was Irish (last name Kennedy, but no relation to the Kennedys) and my maternal grandfather was French Canadian.
